Centuries of History
The story of The Elm begins more than 500 years ago. This Grade II-listed building dates back to the late 15th century, when it was built as an open hall to offer hospitality to drovers travelling south along the historic Bullock Road, bringing cattle from Scotland to the markets of St Ives. Over the centuries, the building evolved, with additions including the distinctive brick chimney installed during the early 17th century.
For many years, the building was known as The Three Horseshoes, becoming a much-loved village pub at the heart of the local community. In 2010, a devastating fire caused significant damage to the historic building, but thanks to a careful restoration, its story didn't end there.
Today, The Elm has been thoughtfully reimagined as part of the Stephen James Inns collection. Original character sits alongside contemporary design, with estate-grown oak featuring throughout the interiors and modern spaces for dining, staying and celebrating.
While much has changed, the building's purpose remains exactly as it was over five centuries ago: to offer a warm welcome, great hospitality and a place for people to gather.

The Elm is proud to be part of the historic Abbots Ripton Estate, a working rural estate that has shaped the landscape and community of the village for generations.
Beyond The Elm, the estate is home to beautiful countryside, woodland, gardens and over 14 miles of footpaths to explore. Alongside its commitment to conservation and responsible stewardship of the land, the estate continues to invest in its buildings, wildlife and local community, helping to preserve this unique corner of Cambridgeshire for future generations.

Lewis
General Manager
With more than a decade in hospitality, Lewis leads The Elm with passion, energy and a genuine love for the industry. Although he originally worked in construction, he discovered hospitality by chance and quickly realised he'd found the career he was meant to be in.
As General Manager, Lewis plays a key role in shaping the businesses direction, supporting the team and ensuring every guest enjoys an exceptional experience. Away from work, he's an enthusiastic traveller, a self-confessed foodie, and has a music taste that ranges firmly into the world of moshing and head-banging—something his team never lets him forget.
Kat
Manager
Kat brings warmth, energy and plenty of personality to The Elm. Having started her hospitality career at just 16, she's passionate about creating memorable experiences for every guest who walks through the door.
She begins most mornings at The Elm with the music turned up and singing along, setting the tone for the day ahead. When she's not at work, you'll often find her making gnomes, enjoying sushi or raising a glass of Champagne—her favourite way to celebrate.
Michael
Head Chef
As Head Chef, Michael leads the kitchen at The Elm, creating seasonal menus inspired by quality British produce and his Italian heritage. Since beginning his career in 2013, he's built a reputation for honest cooking, bold flavours and dishes that keep guests coming back.
Whether it's a perfectly cooked steak, handmade pasta or a comforting pub classic, Michael's focus is always on thoughtful cooking, great ingredients and delivering memorable food. Away from the kitchen, he's a lifelong West Ham supporter who enjoys smoking meat at home and unwinding with a good rum.
